If one is into this type of information, this is the book to own. Clear, cogent explanatory material in a no non-sense format. Highly recommend.

By heating wood chunk inside a large iron pipe with heat from a furnace/kiln, charcoal and a flammable mix of gases are produced. Cooling the gas off by bubbling it through water and filtering out the solid & liquid particles from the gas, many of which are flammable as well, produces a cleaner gas that can be compressed for storage & burned in a regular gasoline engine.
